newThe TD Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up - September 20-28 2008

The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is one of the largest conservation initiatives of the Vancouver Aquarium. What started 15 years ago as a small beach cleanup by four Vancouver Aquarium employees has now grown into the second largest cleanup in the world (The U.S. is in first place - for now!)

Powered by Canadians, this program allows people from all regions and all walks of life to make a positive difference to their environment. Last year alone, over 52,000 Canadians registered to clean up 1,240 shorelines removing 87,489 kg of harmful shoreline litter.

The Nose Creek Watershed Partnership is calling for volunteers from the Renfrew/Bridgeland area to participate in removing litter and debris from Nose Creek in your area! The Nose Creek Watershed Partnership will provide the supplies and a BBQ lunch/dinner for all participants. Sites must be pre-registered with the Vancouver Aquarium so they can provide promotion and information on their website.

Please contact the Nose Creek Watershed Partnership Coordinator at erin.at.ncwp@gmail.com or 403-209-5180 for more information and to register as an individual or group by August 31, 2008.

newNew Playground for Bridgeland - Playground Proposal at 917 Centre Ave NE

The Board of the Bridgeland Riverside Community Association (BRCA) has some very exciting news to share with the community. We have been successful in working with Wayne Baptist of the City of Calgary Parks and the City of Calgary: Parks Planning department (Parks) to develop an accessible playground at 917 Centre Avenue NE. The BRCA has proposed a playground site swap (because Parks is not currently approving new playground space in the City) to replace the outdated and insufficient playground currently located at Riverside Park on 11th Street NE (sometimes called McDougall Park) for a new and exciting playground that meets the community's needs at 917 Centre Avenue NE. Click here for more info.

new Recycling on the Move!

The City of Calgary recycling depot in Bridgeland has long played an integral part of the recycling infrastructure in Calgary. On March 25 the Bridgeland recycling depot was relocated to the parking lot of the Bridgeland Rehabilitation Society at 7 - 11 Street NE. When using the recycling depot, please be mindful of Rehabilitation Society clients who may be in the area. Please use the Bow Valley Drive entrance and pay close attention when entering and exiting the parking lot to ensure everyone's safety.

The new recycling depot location will continue to accept mixed paper, cardboard, new paper, magazines, clear or coloured glass, food and beverage containers, metal food cans and lids, milk jugs and cartons, and plastic bags. For more information on The City of Calgary recycling programs, please visit www.calgary.ca/waste, or call 3-1-1.
