Marlene Michel was born at the Calgary General Hospital and lived her early life in Bridgeland. Her mother was also born at the General Hospital to German from Russia parents and her father came as a 2 month old infant. Both parents were part of the large group of Germans coming from the Volga Region of Russia. Marlene attended Riverside Bungalow, Langevin Junior High, Crescent Heights High School and then went on to receive her BA in Psychology and Sociology from U of Calgary. Marlene's career evolved with the Federal government, in the Post Office, Agriculture department and Parks Canada. She currently lives just outside Calgary in Keoma. Her passion is genealogy and has been learning and writing about the history of the Germans from Russia for a number of years. Marlene has written three books, the most recent "Our People: an historic look at the Germans from Russia living in Bridgeland- Riverside" was published this month. Marlene is joined by Bill Benner who shares her heritage and has lots of stories about their early years in Bridgeland-Riverside.
